Season of Light, Season of Change - Sierra Leone.

ree

Meet Sahr, proprietor of Christ Our King School in Sierra Leone. He is also the pastor of a local church.

Sierra Leone derives its name from the Lion Mountains near its capital, Freetown. In the late 18th century, some African Americans who had fought for the British Crown during the American Revolutionary War were resettled in Sierra Leone, forming a community named Black Loyalists. This resettlement scheme was partly motivated by social issues in London, with the Sierra Leone Resettlement Scheme offering a new beginning for the Black Poor. Many had been slaves who had escaped to join the British, lured by promises of freedom (emancipation). The Sierra Leone Civil War resulted in the destruction of 1,270 primary schools, and in 2001, 67% of all school-age children were out of school. The situation has improved considerably since then with primary school enrolment doubling between 2001 and 2005 and the reconstruction of many schools since the end of the war.

1. What part of the Aprender training has made the biggest difference to you, and why?

The Apto LEAD course of the Aprender training made the biggest difference to me personally, the school, and the church in general. The reason being that, this part of training added more value to my leadership styles/ skills.

2. How has your approach to teaching or leading changed since?

Since I was the administrative leader in the school, my approach to leading changed, and also my teachers approach to changed through monitoring and coaching.

3. Have you noticed any changes in your students since applying what you learned?

I have noticed tremendous changes in our students when I applied what I learned:

A). The academic performance both internal and external in our schools increased from 80% to 100%  passes over three years now.

B). The moral life style and social life style of our pupils are shaped both in conduct and appearance.

4. If you could say one thing to the people who made your training possible, our donors and supporters, what would it be?

I would like to say thank you. Please continue the good works towards us through Aprender.

5. What’s your dream for your students or your school in the coming year?

5). As a proprietor of Christ our King Schools, my dream is to maximise both the academic and infrastructural potential for quality teaching and learning outcome.
