Great Hope: Aprender's August 2025 visit to Uganda

Neil here—a trustee with Aprender for about 15 years. I was lucky enough to visit Uganda this month to road test our transformative new technology, AptoBox, which you heard about last month.

A group of 11 people, including teachers and representatives from Aprender, smile outdoors against the brick building of Great Hope School in Uganda.

Here we are at Great Hope school near Jinja, in eastern Uganda. We showcased our new tech to the teachers there, joined by our new technology partner, Ontum, and working alongside our long-term partner in Uganda, the Jinja Educational Trust.

The little box of tricks we call 'AptoBox' resembles many that arrive in our homes to connect to the internet; Ontum has repurposed some standard, low-cost, equipment which will allow us to deliver training to teachers in places where internet access can't be guaranteed or is too expensive. This provides continuing professional development for teachers who wouldn't otherwise get it, and as a consequence, children receive a better education.

AptoBox downloads modules—including our brand-new Big4 training course—and allows teachers to complete training and teach without being connected to the internet.

Smiling teacher, Eva, sits behind a laptop displaying the Apto training programme; red curtains in the background, wooden furniture, and a water bottle visible.
Eva made history as the first-ever AptoBox graduate.

This is truly a game-changing piece of tech, as testified to by the incredible feedback we got from the teachers at Great Hope (including Eva, the first-ever graduate of the AptoBox's online training course, pictured right!)

After a successful pilot test, we are committed to the belief that AptoBox can change the world of education.

That can only happen with your help—please support us however you can at www.justgiving.com/charity/aprender.

Thank you for your continued support of Aprender's mission.

~ Neil
